Pope St. Pius V loved to meditate and contemplate on the Passion and on Christ crucified. There was a large crucifix that hung on his wall, and upon entering or leaving his room, the Holy Father would always kiss the Saviour's nailed feet. One day, as he was about to kiss the crucifix, the feet on the cross quickly moved away, avoiding the Saint's kiss.
A sharp pang of sorrow pierced the pope's heart. What had he done? Was there an unknown grievous sin that he had committed, as to have Christ refuse his kiss? Full of anguish, the pope made many acts of contrition. Even then, the crucifix would still not allow the grief-stricken pope to kiss the feet. Later it was noticed that the feet of Our Lord on the cross were slightly discolored. It was then discovered that the feet had been poisoned by an enemy, who wished to kill the holy pontiff and who had knowledge of the Holy Father’s pious habit.
Had Christ not moved His feet, Saint Pius V would have surely died. See how Jesus returned the love His beloved Saint had so often shown Him, by miraculously saving his life. It also shows us that we must never judge the way God appears to be treating us. Because if we truly love God, everything that happens to us is from His Own Hands, for own good.
