A Sack of Grain | |
St. Isidore the Farmer (1080-1172) spent most of his life employed under the wealthy John de Vergas. Extreme need forced him to begin work at a young age. But despite his own poverty, the saint was known for his generosity. He often shared his meager meals with the needy. This charitable desire had many unique expressions. One winter day, his fellow workers noticed him taking from a sack of grain. To their surprise, Isidore walked over and fed the precious morsels to a flock of starving birds. The sack, with what grain was left, was later taken to the mill to be ground into flour. However, when it got there, the sack was found to be filled to capacity. What’s more, it yielded twice the normal amount of flour! |
