Calm in Battle

During the Crimean war, a certain French Colonel received an order to attack one of the enemy’s strongholds. He immediately gathered his men, and rushed forward, bravely leading the attack.

The enemy was fully prepared for this skirmish. It was a fierce battle. Through bayonets on all sides, and hundreds of bullets whizzing dangerously close, the Colonel pressed on, followed by his men. Surrounded by death, the officer was amazingly calm - as if he were on parade!

His courage gained the day, and the fort was captured. His General, who had witnessed the scene from a distance, went to meet him. He called out,

"Colonel, what bravery! Where did you learn to be so calm and so self-possessed in the midst of such imminent danger?"

The simple answer was never forgotten by all who heard it.

"My General, I received Holy Communion this morning."

There is no difficulty or danger we cannot overcome when God is with us. In His incredible love for us, He is always ready and waiting for us. But, like that Colonel, we must bring Him into our lives. Even a simple prayer, an act of Faith in God's goodness, or a thought of love and gratitude for all He does for us - everything that lovingly brings Him to our minds and hearts will strengthen our bond with Him, enabling us to face whatever challenges He has in store for our growth.
