Your Turn to Protect Me | |
During the terrible French Revolution, there lived in France a certain holy priest, named Montegazon. He was driven from his home by the revolutionaries. Not safe in any one place, he had to flee from one village to the next. Wherever he went, Fr. Montegazon kept his fellow Catholics at heart. Scattered as they were throughout that terrorized country, he brought to the poor French Catholics all the help a priest could give. This was no small sacrifice, for he well knew that to practice his Faith, especially as a priest, was to risk his very life. After long days and nights of this difficult life, Fr. Montegazon heard that the revolutionaries were following him to seize him and put him to death. So he fled into the mountains, and wandered about for some time. But as hard as he looked, he could find no safe place to hide from the bloodthirsty atheists. At last, utterly exhausted, he sank down on the ground, and cried out to his Creator: “O my God, I cannot go a step farther!” Then acting upon an inspiration from Heaven, the good priest took out from under his coat the pyx, the small box containing the sacred Host. Reverently holding it to his chest, he said: “O Jesus, my beloved Master, for many days I have carefully watched over You; I beg You now to take care of me, and keep me from falling into the hands of my enemies.” Saying these words, he fell asleep in peace, with the sweet confidence that Jesus would watch over him. While he slept, the soldiers, who were determined to murder him, came up to the place where he was lying. But they passed by without even seeing him! God thus rewarded the childlike confidence of His servant. |
