The Pumpkin Tree
One hot summer’s day, a man lay on the ground in the cool shade of a tall oak tree. As he looked idly about him, he noticed a pumpkin vine growing along a nearby fence, and from the vine hung some very large and heavy pumpkins.
Staring at the vine on the fence, the lounging man squinted his eyes in thought.
"That is a very bad way to arrange things!" he said to himself. "Over there, a slender, fragile plant holds such large vegetables, while a strong tree, like this oak I am resting under, only bears tiny acorns." With an air of disdain, the man added proudly, "If I had made the world, I would have arranged things more wisely!"
But just as he finished making this pompous declaration, an acorn suddenly fell from the oak tree above him. Plummeting down, it hit him squarely on the nose! So violently did the nut strike him that his nose began to bleed!
Shocking as it was, the little acorn had a greater impact than merely a cut on his face. This startling and unexpected answer to his thoughts humbled the proud fellow. The lesson was hard to miss. It showed quite clearly and simply what would have happened if he had arranged things in the world "more wisely” than God did.
"I must admit," said the man, grasping his bleeding nose, "that God has arranged everything very wisely! If that acorn which just hit me had been the size of a pumpkin… and falling from that height!" He shuddered at the thought. "Yes! What we have been taught about God is really true: He has arranged everything in creation with both wisdom and forethought."
Time and again people do not hesitate to presume that they know better than God does. Yet this story is a perfect example of how He really has thought through everything in Creation - even down to the seemingly trivial detail of growing pumpkins and acorns! Instead of proudly judging, let us rather praise and thank God for so lovingly and wisely arranging everything in our lives!
