"That's Her!"
It was in the dead of winter, on January 18th, 1896, when a little Spanish girl from the city of Alicante, wandered and got lost in the nearby mountains. She was anxiously sought for, as friends and neighbors joined in the rescue search. But when evening came, however, there had been no sign of the child. And so the winter’s night passed.
The next morning, they continued their long, and hopeless task. Suddenly the gloom was broken with a sudden cry from one of the searchers. They had found her! And on the very edge of a precipice! To their great astonishment, instead of finding the young girl dead, as they had feared, they found her well and lively.
"But!" They huddled around excitedly. "Did you not suffer from the severe cold? Were you not frightened?" In answer to their anxious questions, the little girl smiled calmly.
"No," she said; "a beautiful lady came to me and kept me under her cloak."
This strange answer puzzled the hearers. It seemed quite extraordinary. But yet they could not deny that the child had not only been preserved from the treacherous cliffs, but she had not suffered anything from the winter’s deathly cold.
Their astonishment however only increased when, a few days later, the little one, having entered Church, suddenly cried out:
"That is her! There is the lady who put me under her cloak!"
All eyes turned. Imagine their surprise and gratitude, when they saw the girl was pointing at an image of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
And an author, contemporary to the miracle, concludes the story with: "The little girl repeats this saying every time she sees an image of Our Lady of Mount Carmel."
