A party of men, drinking in an inn, were indulging in ungodly and improper conversation. The innkeeper, a pious, God-fearing man, was very displeased and shocked at the talk that was going on. He tried to change the subject and give a different turn to the conversation, but his guests continued to make use of profane language.
Finding his subtle efforts were bearing no fruit, the innkeeper rose up from the table and, taking down a crucifix which hung on the wall, carried it out of the room. This naturally got the attention of the blaspheming men and, looking rather astonished, they asked him what in the world he had done that for.
The good man answered "It is not right that Our Lord should hear the way you are talking."
This simple but firm reply was quite unexpected. The men shifted uneasily and, looking quite ashamed, they emptied their glasses without another word.
News of this incident quietly made its way through the place, and from that time on, the inn was frequented more and more by people of a good and respectable nature. God blessed and rewarded, even in this life, the courage of that man who stood up for the rights of God in the face of human respect. Let us pray and ask Our Lady to obtain for us from the Sacred Heart of Her Son, the grace that we need to be truly courageous and loving for the glory and rights of God!
