Blessed are the Merciful

Venerable Sr. Paula of Saint Teresa had an extraordinary devotion towards the Church suffering (the souls in Purgatory). As a reward for her dedication to them, she was given miraculous visions.

One time, while she praying a fervent prayer for the Poor Souls, she was brought into Purgatory. There she saw a great number of souls plunged in flames. Close to them she saw our Savior accompanied by His angels.

He pointed out several souls, one after another, which He wanted to take to Heaven. Immediately, those souls were freed and rose up from the flames. In tremendous joy, they flew to their Eternal Home.

Seeing this, the servant of God asked her Divine Spouse, "O Jesus, why this choice of souls among such a vast multitude?"

Jesus replied with comfort and wisdom.

"I have released those who, during life, made great acts of charity and mercy. They have earned that I should fulfill My promise in their regard: Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy."
