The Monk of Valencia

The Life of St. Louis Bertrand, a Dominican, was written by Father Antist, who was also a Dominican, and who actually had the privilege of living with the saint. In this writing, we find the following story.

In the year 1557, while St. Louis Bertrand was in Valentia, the pest broke out in that city. This terrible plague spread rapidly, threatening to wipe out the inhabitants. Everyone trembled for their life. A Religious of the community, Father Clement, wanted to prepare himself fervently for death. He made a general confession of his whole life to St. Louis. As he left the saint, this Religious told him.

"Father, if it should please God to call me now, I shall return and make known to you my condition in the other life."

He died a short time later. The night after he died, he appeared to the saint. He told Louis that he was detained in Purgatory. There remained a few faults which needed to be atoned for. The poor soul begged the saint to have the brothers of community pray for him. Louis immediately went to the Prior, and told him what happened. The Prior was quick to request the prayers and Masses of the monks, for the soul of the recently departed brother.

Six days later, a man of the town, who knew nothing of the whole affair, came to make his confession to Father Louis. He told the saint that the soul of Father Clement had appeared to him. This man saw the earth open, and the soul of the deceased Father come forth all glorious. He added that the soul resembled a resplendent star, which rose through the air towards Heaven.
