A New Style of Duel

Father Fidelis, a Franciscan, was very esteemed in Paris for his eloquent discourses. One morning he was on his way to the church to say Mass. Just as he was passing by a coffee-house, an officer stepped out. Glaring scornfully, he called the monk all kinds of names.

Father Fidelis went up to the officer, and said:

"Sir, you have insulted me. I demand satisfaction."

The officer was speechless. In those days, ‘satisfaction’ for an insult among ‘honorable men’ meant nothing less than a duel! Was this bold monk actually asking the officer to face him in a duel?

Father Fidelis continued:

"As I am the offended party, I have the right to choose the weapons. I choose Confession, and I expect you to come to me tonight to settle the matter."

He told the officer where he lived, and went on his way. Being a man of honor, the officer actually went to the Franciscan’s house, in order to apologize.

During the officer’s stay at his house, Father Fidelis made a lasting impression on him. The next day, the officer was seen to receive Holy Communion from the monk's hand.

From that time forth they were the best of friends.
